the weather right now. even early in the morning i have a couple of issues to tell you about. over to 270 first. i-70 near 270, there is police activity and they want us to tell you to please be aware of take. they're doing a search in that area. there are no lanes blocked but just be aware of that activity. on the westbound side of i-70 right here near 270 up in frederick. we'll take a live look furtr south if you're planning to head here on 270 near route 109. no issues to report as you leave high yachts town down toward germantown and the beltway. 270 is doing fine. back over to the maps. want to let you know the douglas bridge sup right now to let a boat -- is up right now to let a boat through. twiewnts use an alter -- you'll want to use an alternate route. no issues here as you cross the river and head into the downtown area. i'll be back with more traffic coming up at 5:09. it appears the area will be able to run normal service from

manassas this morning. >> train service down the i-66 line was halted last night when a package believed to be containing human remains was found on the tracks. 9news now reporter kristin fisher is in manassas. she has the story. what do we know now? >> reporter: [ no audio ] it of course raises a whole new series of questions. whose are they and how on earth did they end up inside on a black bag on the train tracks right near manassas park. initially a spokesman for vre said that they had indeed found human body parts. but manassas city police still won't confirm italthough they did have a medical examiner on the scene as they worked late into the night searching for clues. the package was discovered several hours earlier around 6:00 yesterday evening right in the middle of the evening rush. police had to close the tracks for several hours which meant

major delays for vre commuters. four vre trains were stopped on the tracks stranding more than 1500 commuters as they were trying to get home. this woman's commute home from d.c. to manassas took more than two hours, longer than usual. >> i guess the vre was doing all they could. there was a lack of communication for a while. it was -- they were relying on passengers for information which is kind of weird to me i guess. >> reporter: yesterday certainly a huge inconvenience for commuters trying to get to this train station in manassas. the good news here is that vre says that all trains are going to be running on time. the tracks are back open, but of course this investigation continues into this bizarre finding. there are some talk about the fact that maybe possibly these were animal body parts and not human body parts but at this point in time it's just too

soon to say. we'll have to wait. manassas city police to come out and make the final determination. mike, andrea? >> all right, thank you. kristin is live in manassas this morning. passengers on metro's redline are hoping for a smoother commute this morning. about a thousand people got stuck on a train yesterday morning when the power went out. the train came to a stop between the friendship heights and tenleytown stations. took an hour to move the train 150 feet to the platform at tenleytown. metro says in the future managers will make quicker decisions about whether to evacuate trains. a shooting at coolidge high school in northwest washington lands one student in the hospital and another in handcuffs. d.c. school's chancellor says the two students got into an argument during the school day. one of the students left school and then came back around 3:15 with a gun. the victim was shot in the leg and was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay. a montgomery county jury has convicted a former army

ranger of killing his roommate. jurors deliberated for 12 hours before finding gary smith guilty of involuntary manslaughter. his roommate michael mcqueen was also a former ranger. he was found shot to death in 2006 after the two had spent a night smoking marijuana, drinking and playing pool. they had served together in afghanistan. the defense contended mcqueen shot himself. smith was retried after his original conviction was overturned. the board that oversees dulles and national airports has adopted new ethics policies, this following complaints that board members spent thousands of taxpayer dollars on expensive travel. the metropolitan washington airports authority board also reinstalled the member dennis martyr and agreed to settle a lawsuit between him and the state of virginia. it involves governor mcdonnell's decision to remove him from the board for his travel spending. he said he's going to resign next month to avoid being a

distraction. it is 5:05. i am watching your money. better than expected news about the housing market. that was good news for stocks. investors encouraged by news that the sales of existing homes jumped to the best level in two years last month. builders broke ground on more new homes in august than all. good pieces of news. checking the numbers, the dow stands at 13,577. rose about 13 points in trading yesterday. nasdaq was better by 5. s&p 500 was better by 2. nearly six million americans will face a tax penalty for not carrying medical coverage once president obama's new health care law goes into effect. that's two million more than previously estimated according to congressional analysts. most of them are expected to be middle class americans. the average penalty will be $1200. want your starbucks at home but don't want to make a whole pot of coffee? starbucks is muscling in on the

single serve coffee market. the seattle-based company says it will start selling its new single serve brewer online this week. about $199. plans to start selling the machine in stores next month. the patent on the technology expired this month prompting other competitors to jump right in. >> i wonder if that means you don't have to pay five bucks for a cup of coffee. maybe it goes down to four. the debate resumes over the fast and furious operation. that story is coming up. >> plus, today, a major u.s. tourist test nation is day -- destination is debuting a new bus. >> we'll be right back.

monika? on the northbound side of i- 95 no issues to report dale city across to springfield and up to 395 to the 14th street bridge. right now all lanes are open. i'll have more on virginia roads coming up at 5:17. back to you. making news now at 5:10, a jury has awarded more than $7 million to a colorado man who claims he got permanent lung damage from microwave popcorn. wayne watson says he ate two packages a day without knowing it contain add potentially dangerous chemical. the chemical had previously been blamed for causing lung problems in popcorn factory workers. today a congressional hearing will review the new report on the fast and furious gun trafficking operation. although the findings clear attorney general eric holder, two other federal law enforcement officials have resigned their posts after that report was released yesterday. federal agents lost tabs on about 2,000 guns during the program. this is so cool.

day and may hold off till after dark saturday. the front will push through overnight so sunday will be cooler and drier. highs sunday around 70. the skins are home. i think the weather will be fine for that. just a few high clouds. you can see them streaming southwest to northeasterly this morning across the region. got a system coming through the great lakes with a few showers and clouds. another shot of cool air up there, places like marquette and up in michigan, they're not going to get out of the 50s today. looking at the futurecast, lots of sunshine today, beautiful. mid- to upper 70s. tonight generally clear but not as cool. lows 59, 60 here in d.c. closer to 50 in the suburbs. tomorrow in the afternoon we'll watch for the possibility of a few showers popping on the ridgetops well west of d.c., west of interstate 81 if you're traveling that way. as we head into saturday, that front gets closer to us so saturday afternoon notice the clock 5:15, we've got showers and storms west of us. looks like this may be approaching us later on in the afternoon, evening hours before the cooler weather for sunday

between the nats and dodgers, the doubleheader evening game started to seem like a letdown at the beginning for nats fans but you can never count out the curly ws. the l.a. dodgers took a 6-0 lead in the 8th inning. two home runs cut it in half and bryce harper with two on send as dribbler to 3rd and he's safe at first base. he beat the throw. mike morris showing no signs of a hurt wrist, get as base hit to right. two more runs come in. the nationals just don't know how to quit. six runs in the 8th inning to tie up the game. but of course not every great story has a happy ending. it wouldn't last. in the 9th, a home run off tyler. the dodgers win this one 7-6 but hey, that was still one heck of a game. the two play again today and a win clinches a post-season berth for the nationals. several redskins players aren't mincing words about the refereeing during the rams game

about 15 minutes ago. tracks back open. service back to normal. commuters very happy about that. clearly after yesterday's big delays. but they still can't believe what was found on the tracks yesterday afternoon. they were told initially it could be human bodies parts inside. they are still -- owe body parts inside. they're shocked. >> i have no words. that's worrisome and makes me sick. >> just shock. you know, having something like that happen, you know, always takes you by surprise. >> reporter: to be clear, manassas city police are still trying to identify exactly what was inside that bag. if they are indeed human body parts, that of course opens up a whole new series of questions. whose are they? how did they end up in a black bag on the tracks?

originally it was a spokesperson for the vre who said they had found body parts. police have not confirmed it but they did have a medical examiner on the scene as they worked late into the night. the package was discovered right around 6:00 yesterday evening right in the middle of the evening rush. police had to close the tracks for several hours to investigate which meant major, major delays for vre commuters. four vre trains were stopped on the tracks stranding more than 1500 commuters. the commute home for many folks from d.c. took well over three hours longer than usual, but again this morning the good news here is that the service on this track back to normal. vre says everything is back up and running as this investigation continues. mike? >> thanks, kristin fisher live in manassas this morning. prosecutors and defense attorneys failed to reach an agreement for prince george's county delegate tiffany

allston. she has been found guilty of using $50,000 in state money to pay an employee in her law office but her attorneys are appealing that verdict. she's also facing accusations that she used campaign money to pay for her wedding expenses as well. alston's attorney says one of the questions under debate is whether she will be allowed to remain in office. a new courthouse building is ruining the intentions of a 9/11 memorial in rockville. the plaque features the name of 11 montgomery county residents killed in the terrorist attacks. it was designed so that on each september 11 a beam of sunlight lights up the memorial at 8:46, the time the first plane hit the world trade center. but a tall courthouse annex across the street will block the sunlight at that time. however, the sun will illuminate the plaque at 9:37 which is the time the pentagon was hit. many people send their work days in a cubical sitting in an office chair. do you ever check how much that chair costs you're sitting? >> at frederick county's 911

climate control -- prototype for a climate controlled airline seat. passengers can control how warm or cool they are instead of the relying on the fan in the ceiling. they can't say exactly if or when they might actually showing up on flights. new census data being released this morning show the u.s. economy may finally be stabilizing and starting to trend higher. it shows more americans are on the move and more young people are leaving their parents' homes for college or the job market. a sharp decline in the birth rate is leveling off and poverty is slowing but there are some points of concern. the jobless rate remains over 8%. homeownership dropped for a fifth straight year. if the worst part of your shopping experience is trying on clothes, there may be a fix for that. the makers of meality says it's the only type of device that lets you keep your clothes on.

nice morning here on wisconsin avenue. still a ways to go before we get that sunrise. 49 degrees on the dew point with a temp of 55. relative humidity of 80% and just a few high clowldz. want to show you the national temperatures. we have cool stuff right across the northern states here. cooler air is coming in from canada. the fall season beginning across the north but the heat in oklahoma city today at 94. a little bit of that warmth is going to head our way tomorrow and saturday before another front heads this way. but you can clearly see this northwesterly flow. you see the clouds diving from the northwest to the southeast. that's that push of the cooler air into the northern part of the country. it's going to hit the great lakes and go more east than south here initially. but by saturday night, the front comes through so sunday will cool down behind that. until then we're looking at just a few high clouds with a good deal of sunshine. we may see a shower west of i- 81 tomorrow afternoon with a better chance for us late saturday afternoon, saturday evening with that front. so looks great really today, 78. tonight closer to 60 in d.c.
